Why Scouting??
My son participates in sports and school activities, why should I enroll him in Cub Scouts?
In a recent article in "Team Lowe's Racing News", Rick Hendrick, the owner of Hendrick Motorsports that fields the No. 48 Lowe's Chevy driven by Jimmie Johnson talked about what he looks for in his team members.
"I have found that if you've been an Eagle Scout, or been in the military, you've done the growing up," Hendrick said. "You've been through a lot of stages in your life, and I think that's just about as important on a resume as just about anything else you can have. It shows us maturity and the will to follow and knowing what being under command means . . . That's a big plus on a resume."
In Scouting we're not necessary preparing you for the military, although my WWII veteran Scout Leader's told me that their Boy Scout training gave them a big advantage when "camping" on the battlefields of Europe. Some even credited their Boy Scout training with saving their lives and the lives of their fellow soldiers.
Scouting teaches a boy to be a good follower, which is essential to becoming a good leader. Cub Scouting may seem like silly fun and games however, it is creating the foundation of discipline, self-confidence, and self-esteem, which will continue to be built upon throughout Boy Scouts and will prepare the very few for the responsibility of the rank of Eagle Scout.
Even for the boys who never attain the Eagle rank, Cub Scout and Boy Scout experience will provide life-long benefit, fond memories, and life-long friendships.
